Bird house

At the beginning of March, I volunteered to help Emily's class build bird houses with the Bremer County Conservationist.  It was made of pre-cut, pre-drilled pine boards that just needed to be nailed together.  Emily only hit my finger once (and I sported a blood blister for quite a while).  The house is specifically designed for a House Wren.

At home, I supervised Emily putting a coat of primer on the outside.  I forgot how much of a learning curve painting is!

I asked Emily repeatedly if she wanted to paint anything special on it or a different color, but she was happy with just white.  Today (4/13/13), Austin finally hung it up on a tree in the backyard.  We'll see what happens!

March Madness

Emily really got into the NCAA basketball tournament this year--or at least the part where you fill out a bracket.  She did one for both the men and women with Austin and eagerly anticipated the next time she could highlight her picks.  She had typical six-year-old methods of picking winners.  She chose Pacific to win the men's tournament "because it's so weird that there is a school with the same name as an ocean!"

I am proud to say that even though I knew zilch about the teams going into the tournament, I ended up winning the office pool of my bookkeeping client that was my former employer.  There was no money involved, but it's nice bragging rights. :o)

Friday Family Game Night

We have established a Friday night tradition of Family Game Night.  The kids get to stay up an hour later than school nights, and the extra time is spent playing games or doing puzzles.  It is something the kids look forward to (although I think Lincoln associates it more with staying up later).  This is a picture of a silly game of Steady Freddy...

Park at last

Today was finally warm enough to venture to the "castle park".  It was fun to see how the kids have grown over the long winter and what new things they are able to do.  I think we've also reached the point where I don't feel like I have to follow them around all the time (although I still have to fulfill swing pushing requests). :)

Birthday plans

I recently found Emily's birthday party planning folder while dusting.

Nothing says birthday like sticker overload.

Kinda curious what premeditated thing I'm going to get yelled at for at noon.  And nervous about the cake silliness.

Apparently there is only 5 minutes of "chit-chat" allowed.

Wondering who is giving the [short] speech at 12:30pm.  Not sure Austin is that into Thomas.
Which makes me think--what is she planning for my birthday?!?

Confessions of an imperfect mom...

It's ironic (or devine intervention) that this week at Mom's Morning Out, a mom who had just returned from the national Hearts at Home conference spoke about her experience.  I am planning to attend the regional conference next fall.  The theme was "No More Perfect Moms."

I am a recovering perfectionist, so this topic hits home.  I came to some hard realizations about it this week, too.  Up until a couple weeks ago, Emily has been, in general, extremely enthusiastic about piano lessons and practicing.  I have been sitting with her, coaching and critiquing teaching through each practice, although she is officially taking lessons from a college student at Wartburg.  As Emily has flown through beginning lesson books, I have been harping on correcting technique along the way.  My Suzuki/classical training and experience came through, as well as my perfectionism.

It all came to a head last month while Emily was working on songs for the STAC piano festival at Wartburg that were well beyond what should be expected of her.  They were something a 3rd or 4th year student would be playing rather than a 6 month beginner.  It wasn't really the teacher's fault, as she was just using the normal progression of songs.  Emily had just learned each one so fast, and I had sort of asked for a challenge.

Anyway, Emily finally hit a wall and just started shutting down.  She wouldn't listen or cooperate at all, and we'd both get frustrated within 5 min. of sitting down at the piano.  Finally, after some deep reflections, I realized I had become the mom I totally did not want to be.  I had started imposing my experiences and my perfect expectations on Emily.  In the process, I had squashed her joy.

After talking to some very wise women in my life, I realized that I just had to completely step away.  If my goal for her was to be an outstanding, accomplished pianist with an impeccable resume, I was clearly not going to get there on the track we were on.  But should that even be my goal?  It's just like wanting and pushing your child to be an all-star athlete or a perfect A-student.  My true vision is and should be to foster a lifelong love for music--even if it's imperfect.

So, I apologized to Emily for my actions and told her the new plan.  Her job was to play through her festival pieces once a day for the next 10 days.  My job was to not say anything unless she had a specific question.  She readily agreed.  That night she played through her songs the best I'd ever heard--finally correcting some of the things I'd being critiquing for weeks.  Then she started messing around with chords and the damper pedal.  She bounded into the office explaining that she was making up a song about a princess being lifted up into dreamland.  And my heart sang.  I had not permanently messed her up.  I had not killed the joy.  Praise the Lord for grace and new beginnings.

Follow up:  For the most part, I have stayed away from the piano and said very little.  It has been so very hard.  Every fiber in my body wants to correct every imperfect dynamic, staccato and hand position.  But Emily has happily sat down to play every single day since then.  She did fabulous at the festival (see later post).  Her teacher is graduating, so we will be done with lessons on April 24.  We will take a break and then decide what to do next fall.

Easter morning

We attended Easter morning service with Austin's family.  Certain people were not in the mood to take pictures.  Here is what we got...

Cousin fun

After the play, the kids went on an egg hunt outside and played hard together.  The day ended with Grandma story time.
